Macramé is a versatile form of textile art. Using a selection of several knots to create any form
of textile from wall art, to plant hangers, clothing items and accessories and everything in-between, If you think it, you can macramé it … within reason of course.
Many people remember macramé from the 1970’s as it came to symbolize the Bohemian Style
a time in history when avocado -green decor and loud orange and brown patterned carpets
covered the house from wall to ceiling, along with these questionable decor choices some
thought that macramé had been long forgotten until recently … we do know trends tend to be
cyclic,
In fact macramé has been around for centuries and will be most likely be here for many years
to come (yay!) the history and origin of macramé is actually quite interesting. Believed the term
Macrame comes from the 13th century Arabic word “Migramah” which means “Fringe”
Others believe it comes from the Turkish word “Macramé” meaning “napkin” or “towel” As a
way to secure pieces of weaving by weaving excess pieces of threading at the top or bottom of
fabric.
Arab weavers used decorative knots to finish the excess thread on shawls, veils, and towels. It
then crosses overseas into Europe via North Africa, when the Moors brought macramé to Spain,
then into The Victorian Era of Great Britain. most commonly via sailors accustomed to different
nautical knots added to the evolution of macramé and sold their wares at each port.
With such a rich and broad history it’s not surprising that macramé comes back into popularity
over the years, steeped in tradition and symbolism which has now the case in the 20th century
as we associate macramé with as aforementioned Boho Style and those of us who enjoy an
eclectic lifestyle.
When you buy from Home and Soul you can rest-assured knowing that the practice is respected
